This is the most common and efficient mechanism of pest control. It involves the actual use of pesticides (chemicals) in application to either pest directly, host, or poisoning them on what they feed on. These chemicals exist in different formulations.
This can be solutions, emulsions, suspensions, powders, pellets, or even tablets. There are as well different methods or modes of applications for these chemicals. These methods include; spraying, coating, sprinkling, and drenching infested areas.
There is also a different mode of an application called the systemic method. This is where a particular chemical is introduced into the body system of the host so that the pests die or keep from attack. This method is not so popular because it exposes the host to other secondary risks due to chemical induction into their systems.
These chemicals have different modes of action. They don’t necessarily kill the pest. They either repel e.g. mosquito repellant, some kill, while others inhibit their activities in various ways. Some chemicals have strong unpleasant odors while others could be odorless but toxic.
The physical mechanism of pest control
In this mechanism, several methods are employed to control pests. These methods include;
- Use of high temperatures: This is affected by increasing the temperatures of the infested areas. This is facilitated by use either hot water or steam, or even exposure to the sun or fire. This method works for mites, bedbugs, and cockroaches.
- Use of water: This is basically to wash away the pests, their eggs or larvae. The water can be cold to hot. Increasing humidity in some areas also helps keep off pests that enjoy dusty environments for instance mites.
- Exposure to light: Most pests hide in dark areas like closets, bedding, and crevices. Exposing these pests to light e.g. bedbugs and cockroaches makes their environment unfavorable to them, thus escape.
Mechanical mechanisms of pests control
In this method, pests are manually removed from their areas of infestation. This can be done by hand picking, dusting off, sweeping, brushing, using vacuum cleaners, traps, nets or coating the areas with substances such as paint. It’s the most traditional way of pest control.
