    What is the Purpose of the Book of Proverbs (1)

    One of the most popular books of the Holy Bible is the book of Proverbs. The popularity of this book is in the content, and above all, the author. The book of Proverbs was written by King Solomon, who was also called the Preacher. He was the son of King David and is considered the wisest man in the Bible, having been given the gift of wisdom from God. With his unmatched wisdom, King Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. So what is the purpose of the book of Proverbs?

    A proverb is similar to a parable, just that it is a wise saying. Other than that, there are other purposes of this special book, and here are some of them;

    • Teach people the Fear of God

    King Solomon emphasizes the need for people to have the fear of the Lord. He puts this into words by mentioning the Fear of the Lord fourteen times in the book. He also states that when one has the fear of God, they will be wise and knowledgeable.

    • Instruct people to live a Godly life

    In the second chapter of the book of Proverbs, The Preacher states that one needs to live a life that pleases the Lord. With the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding from God, you can be sure of living a Godly life.

    • To warn

    The book also warns us to stay away from evil people and their ways, and also the promiscuous woman/prostitute. King Solomon warns in several verses that the prostitute will lead one into a pit. This is stated in Proverbs 5:4&5, 6:26, 7:27, among others.

    • To encourage

    Solomon was wise enough to know how some people work hard to achieve their goals, while others look for quick ways to get rich (Proverbs 13:11). That is why he has mentioned the merits of working hard, and the ramifications of getting rich in wicked ways. This is also covered in Proverbs 14:23, 16:3, 12:24, 6:6 – 8, among others.

    • To educateWhat is the Purpose of the Book of Proverbs (1)

    Other than teaching the young how to live a godly life, the book of Proverbs also speaks to the married woman, and how she needs to be wise, humble, polite, loving, hardworking, God-fearing, and how to manage her house. All this is covered in Proverbs 31:10 – 31.

    The entire book of Proverbs is helpful to everyone; young and old, wealthy and poor, man and woman, righteous and wicked, rulers and servants. It warns the wicked against their evil plans and what will come afterward, encourages the hard working, guides the young, educates the virtuous wife, and every single verse is helpful in a way or another. It is a guide book to an overly righteous and prosperous life that is pleasing to the Lord.
